Famous Mao Jacket by Vivienne Tam

FROM CINDY GALLOP'S CLOSET

Newsprint Chairman Mao jacket with alternating positive and negative B&W heads of the Leader-- by artist Zhang Hongtu. Nicely structured shoulders, two buttons to close, one button on cuffs, no vents, wide lapels, no pockets, fully lined. Made in Hong Kong. Size 2--as in 1, 2, 3 (& sometimes 4). Roughly a size 6.

STORY I grabbed this from the 1995 collection --it was controversial at the time, and still arresting as ever. The V&A in London has several pieces (archived), similar jackets were shown at the Fashion & Politics show at FIT, NYC, in 2009, then in S/S 2015 it was featured in the Met's very splashy China Through The Looking Glass exhibition, all about the impact of Chinese aesthetics on Western fashion.

We say:

A total steal, for a piece of fashion history. You'll never find this elsewhere.
